“Bella Donna” (released July 27, 1981) was Stevie Nicks’ debut album
as a solo artist (though she also remained a member of Fleetwood Mac
until her departure in 1987). Foreshadowing the LP (on July 8, 1981),
“Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around” was its first single, in addition to being
the only track on the album not written or co-written by Nicks. Instead it
was penned by Tom Petty & Mike Campbell, and originally intended as a
vehicle for Petty’s band, The Heartbreakers.
In a great stroke of luck, “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around” was released
only days before MTV launched on Aug. 1, 1981, and was just the 25th
song played on the music channel’s inaugural day.
