("Why Don't You Do Right?" by Kansas Joe McCoy, 1936)

This song has an unusual history. Originally recorded as "Weed Smoker's
Dream," (with totally different lyrics, obviously), the composition
somehow acquired its new lyrics, although the authorship is a matter of
some dispute-- Joe McCoy receives the sole songwriter's credit. Goodman
& Lee recorded it in 1942, then re-enacted their performance, shown
here, for the 1943 film, "Stage Door Canteen." Peggy was just 23 at the
time, with a long and illustrious career ahead of her. Goodman,
meanwhile, was only five years removed from his epoch-making Carnegie
Hall concert (January 16, 1938), which critic Bruce Eder described as
"the single most important jazz or popular music concert in history:
jazz's 'coming out' party to the world of 'respectable' music."
